Each month in the Resolve Newsletter we will be showcasing either a client’s company or a company that we work with on a regular basis. If the lockdown has taught us anything it is that we need to support small businesses and so we thought we could do this by showcasing a different company each month. This month we caught up with Nick Murray Willis from Bug Animations Ltd, who creates animated videos for TV, internet, advertising & live events.
What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros of running your own business is the total control of what work you do and don’t do. You can shape which direction you go in. The cons would probably be making sure you have enough work, but not too much work! It can be a tricky balance.
What advice would you give to other individuals thinking of starting their own business?
Make sure there is demand for the service you provide and that you have the skills to provide a quality product. Be prepared to put the hours in. It can often be tough to begin with but once you’ve got some regular clients everything gets easier.
What lessons have you learnt over the years of running your own business?
Be productive. Be different. And put yourself out there.
How has your company had to adapt during the 2020 pandemic?
I’ve always worked remotely so that hasn’t made a huge difference. I used to share a studio with like minded creatives but now it’s just me and the dog. I primarily work with sports companies to create social media content. I lost a few jobs at the beginning of the pandemic due to major tournaments being postponed, but there is always demand for online content so work has continued to come in.
How do you ensure a work / life balance?
Often projects require me to work long hours and weekends, so when there is time in-between jobs I make sure I relax as much as possible. I don’t put too much pressure on myself during downtime especially if I have upcoming work booked in.
What are the values that drive you?
I like to be creative, enjoy work, do it to a professional standard and have the opportunity to grow.
What is the one piece of advice you always give to clients/customers?
Be clear and realistic about what is achievable with their timeframe and budget.
